How To Embrace DC’s Winter Season
By no means is D.C. known for its picture-perfect winters. But what we lack in snow, we make up for in spirit and lots of activities. We picked the best free outdoor activities that are actually worth leaving your house after 5 p.m. for (we know it’s hard).

By no means is D.C. known for its picture-perfect winters. In fact, it’s pretty depressing to look at. But what we lack in snow, we make up for in spirit and lots (like lots) of activities. With the help of Jade Womack from Clockout DC, we picked the best free outdoor activities that are actually worth leaving your house after 5 p.m. for (we know it’s hard).
For Something Tropical: Season's Greetings
A holiday in the Bahamas? Expensive, far, overdone. Visiting the Botanical Gardens? Original, free, freaking fantastic. Bask in the tropical room, watch the ornate model train exhibit, and check out the hundreds of poinsettias.
For Getting Cozy: Rock Creek Park Bonfire
POV: you’re roasting s’mores in your woollies with your besties in the middle of D.C’s prettiest park. Coerce someone into bringing some mulled wine and that’s a party.
For Some Holiday Spirit: National Christmas Tree/Menorah
Yes, it’s touristy, but it’s still good, and I’ll tell you why. Picture the biggest pine you’ve seen in your life surrounded by 58 baby trees. Just when you thought it couldn’t get weirder, you see the biggest menorah in the world!

For Something Active: Skate In Circles
Pretend you’re in a hallmark movie and go for a glide around the National Sculpture Garden or on the Georgetown waterfront. Or go for a walk with City Girls Who Walk. Or, if you’re an absolute sicko, sign up for a 5K.
For Something Bright: Georgetown Glow
Essentially giant sun lamp therapy, this free exhibit is guaranteed to lift your mood. This light art installation throughout Georgetown features five different artists. Many are interactive and it is open from 5 p.m. - 10 p.m nightly.
