Get to Know Columbia Heights’ Best Patios

I love spending D.C. summer afternoons on local patios, enjoying sunshine, people watching, and maybe throwing back a beverage or two. Here are my favorite spots to spend a sunny day in Columbia Heights.

Get to Know Columbia Heights’ Best Patios

Now that temperatures are safely below 100, it’s the perfect time of year to laze away an afternoon on a local patio, enjoying sunshine, people watching, and maybe throwing back a beverage or two.

Grab Coffee and Donuts at Johnny’s.

Johnny’s just opened last year, but it’s one of those places that feels like it’s been there for decades. This boxing-themed, Ohio-tinged, dive-ish spot boasts lovely outdoor seating and a much more extensive menu than the dive bar charm would suggest. During the day, it’s a cafe serving coffee, donuts, and breakfast sandwiches.

Keep It Low-Key with Brunch at Wonderland Ballroom.

It’s a classic for a reason. Whether you’re at the streatery or the beer garden, Wonderland Ballroom is a great place to soak up both sun and mimosas. At around $13 a plate and $15 mimosa pitchers, it’s one of the cheapest brunches in town. Just please, don’t get the mac n’ cheese pancakes; I swear they’re not made for human stomachs.

Is There a Game On? Time To Head to Buddy’s.

I don’t follow sports, but luckily, Buddy’s is more of a good bar where sports just happen to be playing. The roomy outdoor bar is equipped with TVs, lanterns, and lots of seating. With extensive cocktail and mocktail menus, Buddy’s is a nice spot if you’re looking for an alternative to boozy drinks. I love the Bison with butterfly tea and cherry.

Honorable Mentions

The El Chucho rooftop and streetery come in clutch on days when you really just need a frozen marg with some Tajin on the rim. And up the block, Queen’s English has a constantly changing Cantonese-inspired menu and cute patio that’s perfect for cocktail hour, or dinner if you’re willing to splurge a little.

If you’re looking to get into something a bit greener during your patio time (wink, wink), we’ve also got recs for that.
