Walk A Mile on Georgia Avenue

Welcome to the first installment of our walking series, where we pick a D.C. street to walk a mile on and see what cool stuff we can find along the way! To kick things off, I walked a stretch of Georgia Avenue NW starting above Howard University.

How It Works

1. We pick a street within city limits.
2. We pick a mile on that street (Georgia Avenue between Upshur and Fairmont streets.)
3. We recommend ~10 things to do on that mile.

How To Get There

Take the Green Line to the Georgia Ave-Petworth stop. Or, take the D4X or D40 bus. Both buses run along the whole mile.

What To Do

I decided to walk south to north because that’s where the best coffee options are 🤭 And let me tell you, there’s a plethora of options. If you’re looking for somewhere cozy to work, head to Sankofa Video Books & Café. It’s got the best selection of books and tons of locked-in Howard students.

But I was on the go, so I grabbed an Ethiopian-style coffee from Harrar Coffee & Roastery. I started chatting with the friendly owners, and before I knew it my coffee was gone. Luckily, just one more block up is Doubles, a third-wave cafe and all-time favorite of mine. So, I had to grab their cherry hibiscus espresso tonic as well. Power levels were now at 100%.

Since I’d been walking a ways, I decided to grab a slice from Sonny’s Pizza right next door and munch on their covered patio to hold myself over until my next stop. Chewy, crunchy perfection. But I almost immediately had regrets as I realized Heat Da Spot Café was right across the street, which has the best Ethiopian breakfast in town and a life-changing secret green sauce.

It was around this time that I wished I had brought some friends because St. Vincent Wine bar and Midlands Beer Garden up the block are both perfect for a sunny afternoon drink on the patio. But, probably best not to drink during the workday anyway … right? 👀

Being the responsible reporter I am, I popped into the Plain Sight art gallery instead and viewed their exhibit on Korean fermentation vessels. I then continued to meander up towards Petworth, passing by the beloved dive bar Looking Glass Lounge (again this was 11 a.m. on a weekday) and passed the Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro stop.

Now, we were getting somewhere. A quick refresh in the Petworth Recreation Center’s splash park later, and I was on to my final destination, Honeymoon Chicken. Finally, as I was digging into my hot honey chicken, I couldn’t help feeling it was well earned after my morning explorations.
