Rideshares in D.C. are about to get pricier
May 4, 2023
Hey, neighbor! Are you planning on getting up at an ungodly hour to watch the royal coronation on Saturday? Well, don’t do it alone, there are tons of watch parties around town with tea, scones, and fellow Anglophiles.

What's CITY Talking About?
Congestion Fee For Rideshares
You might’ve received an email from Uber about contacting DC Council. If you’re wondering why, it’s because the council introduced an emergency bill that would charge a $2 congestion fee for rideshares heading in and out of downtown during rush hour. The fee is part of D.C.’s ongoing budget talks for 2024 and aims to help fund making Metrobuses free. [Twitter/City Cast DC 🎧]
Local Hotels Can’t Accept More Migrants
The city’s Department of Human Services announced this week that local hotels no longer have room for migrants arriving on buses from Texas and Arizona. The governors of those states have been sending thousands of families to D.C. for over a year now, in protest of the Biden administration’s border policy, and D.C. has been putting them up in hotels as temporary lodging. The announcement comes as officials expect a surge of incoming migrants this month. [Washington Post 🔒 /City Cast DC 🎧]
New President At Howard
Howard University has chosen its new president. Ben Vinson III is a historian of the African diaspora in Latin America. He will start on Sept. 1, taking the seat from Wayne A.I. Frederick, who is stepping down after 10 years. Vinson described Howard as a “fast-moving locomotive train” that he wants to keep pushing. [Washington Post 🔒]

How Avalon Theater Defied The Odds

Avalon Theater in Chevy Chase is turning 100 this weekend. And that’s wild, because though it was founded back when neighborhood movie houses were everywhere, nowadays, theaters are struggling. But as movies moved to suburban multiplexes, the Avalon stayed put. Locals were so upset by the idea of it going away that they turned the place into a nonprofit. Avalon Board Members Bill Oberdorfer and Dan Spealman told us how they pulled it off.
It’s D.C. trivia time!
Answer to last week’s question: What was the original name of the Washington Wizards when the franchise was founded in 1961? It was The Chicago Packers, but became the Capitol Bullets when they moved to Baltimore. Nice work Jennifer L., Maia J., and Alexander Q. for getting the answer mostly right!
Next week’s question: Who is Hains Point named after? Give it your best guess!
