Public housing director quits amidst turmoil

May 5, 2023

Hey, DC, I’m weeping this Friday morn’ because Fainting Goat is closing. The OG bottomless brunch joint on U Street NW will pour its last mimosas on May 14.

What's CITY Talking About?

The Fight Over K Street NW

City officials are divided over the K Street Transitway project which has been Mayor Muriel Bowser’s favorite child since before the pandemic. The project would build separate bus lanes on K Street between 12th and 21st streets, to help office commuters and (hopefully) revitalize downtown. But D.C. council would rather use the money to make Metrobuses free, saying that’s better for low-income workers. Where do you think the funding should go? [City Cast DC 🎧]

DCHA Director Steps Down

D.C. Housing Authority Director Brenda Donald is stepping down during a tumultuous time for the agency. It’s been accused of overpaying landlords, failing to maintain “decent, safe, and sanitary” housing for residents, and struggling to expediently update its decade-old waitlist. After less than two years in the role, Donald plans to leave this summer before her contract ends  and has not explained why. [DCist/City Cast DC 🎧]

Red Line Riders Rejoice

Starting on Monday, Red Line trains will arrive every six minutes during weekday morning and afternoon rush hours. This is the second increase of train frequencies in six weeks as Metro works to address intense crowding. [Washington Post 🔒]

It’s Like TSA, But At School

Prince William County School Board unanimously voted to install weapon detection screeners in all middle and high schools by the fall. The scanners, which are used in more than 200 schools across the country, are expected to cost about $10.7 million. The county has been contemplating new safety measures in the aftermath of recent school shootings across the U.S. [WTOP]
