Why you shouldn’t get too excited about a Commanders deal

May 12, 2023

Hey, neighbor. Lead Producer Priyanka Tilve here again.

It’s the last day of Spy Week! In case you missed it, the City Cast DC podcast covered everything from local restaurants with spy lore to tips on finding the spies amongst us (there are 10,000 of them, apparently). Disclaimer: Hey DC is not liable for any tension that arises as a result of your newfound suspicions.

What's CITY Talking About?

D.C. Homicide Rate is Significantly Up

January to April have been the most deadly first months of any year in D.C. in the last decade. The city saw a 9% increase in homicides from this time last year, and it could continue to rise as violence prevention workers and city leaders are bracing for the start of the summer — historically the most violent period — while MPD faces historic staffing shortages. The Fed Gov Wants to Ban Salary Questions in Interviews

Federal agencies may soon be prohibited from asking about your salary during job interviews. It’s long been argued that relying on a candidate’s past pay to determine their new offer perpetuates unfair pay practices. The proposal will undergo a 30-day public comment hearing before it’s potentially finalized. [Axios]

Another Delay in Commanders Deal

Josh Harris’s tentative $6.05 billion deal to purchase the Washington Commanders from Daniel Snyder raised some concerns among the NFL Finance Committee, namely that the financing includes an unusually large number of limited partners. If they don’t vote to ratify this month, the NFL could schedule a special vote over the summer. [Washington Post 🔒]

  • Are you excited about a new buyer for your team? So is City Cast DC producer Julia Karron. But, she says, don’t get too excited yet. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Maryland Senate Race, WashPo's Mea Culpa, and Secret Spy Spots

Maryland has suddenly got a hot, open senate race and it’s likely to feature at least three DMV icons, with major implications about race, ideology, and public safety. Plus, the Washington Post’s Editorial Board issued a mea culpa about a key race in D.C.’s last election, and the team reflects on lessons from Spy Week to defend their personal spy spot suggestions.

🕵️ Your final Spy Week tip: Definitely save some time for the Berlin exhibit near the end of your journey through the Spy Museum. The best part? You can interrogate your friends and family, and perhaps even give them a little (light! friendly!) shock if they betray you.

Have a great weekend!
