Bowser proposes a new crime bill
May 16, 2023
Morning, D.C.! It’s already HOT. The city opened up its spray parks yesterday, weeks earlier than usual, but with shorter hours for now. They’ll be open from 12 to 4 p.m. daily.

What's CITY Talking About?
Bowser's New Crime Bill
Mayor Muriel Bowser has proposed a new crime bill to D.C. Council. The “Safer, Stronger DC” legislation aims to increase public safety with several changes like making strangulation a type of felony assault, increasing penalties for illegal gun possession and for violent crimes that target people with disabilities, and increasing reimbursements for private security cameras. U-haul Kidnapping
On Friday, a Prince George’s County man was arrested for kidnapping and assaulting a woman in a U-Haul truck. An attempted traffic stop led to a police chase, after which, police found the woman in the back of the truck. She says she’d been kidnapped at a convenience store in Southeast D.C. The 62-year-old suspect faces dozens of charges including assault, kidnapping, and driving while impaired. [WTOP]
Union Station’s Expensive Makeover
The Federal Railroad Administration released a new, revised plan for the redevelopment of Union Station. It’s projected to cost $8.8 billion dollars and be completed by 2040. After the original plan was criticized for being too car-centric, the new proposal includes less parking, an underground drop-off area, and an integrated bus terminal. The FRA will host two public hearings next month and welcomes public comment on the plan until July 6th. [Washington Post 🔒]
