What's CITY Talking About?
Fire In the Fire House
A group of 100 D.C. Fire and EMS employees are suing the city for $100 million, saying it illegally deprived them of earned retirement benefits. They allege that after decades of service, they received almost no retirement benefits, and that the money was illegally used to purchase equipment instead. [WTOP]
Tidal Basin Is Getting a Raise
The National Park Service has just approved a plan to rebuild the walkway around the Tidal Basin 5 feet higher because of rising sea levels. Already, portions of the walkway frequently flood twice a day at high tide, causing erosion and harming our beloved cherry trees. NPS also plans to build the seawalls in a way that they can be raised up even more if needed. (DCist)
Teachers Asked to School Hop
Elementary school teachers in Alexandria might have to work at multiple schools next year because of staffing shortages. Specifically, “encore” teachers of subjects like gym, music, and art are being asked to fill in at higher enrollment schools with more demand. Teachers opposed the change at a school board meeting last week, saying it’s the “worst thing we can do for staff retention.” [Washington Post 🔒]

Where Is It?

Correct! This is the Titanic Memorial in the southwest corner of Southwest Waterfront. The memorial honors those who died because they gave up their seats in lifeboats to save others. It was originally at the foot of New Hampshire Avenue but was stored away to make room for the Kennedy Center. In 1968, it was re-erected at its present location.
Nice work, Lexi P., Lauren M., and Sylvia C. who were our first three people to guess correctly!
Our next photo was submitted by reader Kathy H. and will require your best geography skills.

Can you guess what intersection this is? Bonus points if you submit your own “where is it?” photo!

Moon Rabbit Abruptly Closed, Now What?

Big Yikes! In an objectively hilarious turn of events, almost 800,000 Maryland license plates are promoting a Philippines gambling site. The license plate is meant to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812, but the plate's URL begs to differ.
