How to cope with the smoke

June 8, 2023

Hey, D.C.! What are your thoughts on the D.C.’s pedestrian zones? Are you a fan? Or are they annoying? We’re looking for people to text or call in their hot (or cool) takes for an upcoming episode of our podcast City Cast DC.

What's CITY Talking About?

Court Order Harshing the Mellow

A judge has ordered a Cleveland Park resident to stop smoking medical marijuana in his home. His neighbor sued in 2020, claiming that the smell made her physically sick. The man testified he smokes medical marijuana on the patio to help him sleep. The judge banned him, or anyone who visits his home, from smoking or burning marijuana in his home or within 25 feet of his neighbor’s home. [WTOP]

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag)

Anne Arundel County just banned plastic bags in grocery stores. Starting in January 2024, shoppers must bring their own reusable bags or pay 10 cents each for paper bags. Many other counties in the DMV have a similar ban. Prince George’s County is likely to follow suit later this month. [WTOP]

GOP Reviews D.C. Election Laws

House Republicans examined D.C. election laws at a hearing yesterday as they push for stricter voting laws in the District. The House Oversight Committee discussed passing a law to require in-person IDs, prohibit sending unsolicited mail-in ballots, and stop same-day registration. The longstanding conflict between liberal city officials and Congressional reared its head. Rep. Joe Morelle (NY) said, “If we are being honest, this hearing is not actually about Washington D.C … [It’s] about giving Republicans a platform to impose extreme restrictions on voters across this country.” [Washington Post 🔒]

D.C.-Made Beers You Have to Try

Thanks all for coming out on a beautiful Saturday to talk beer with us! (Kaela Cote-Stemmermann/City Cast DC)

There are 16 craft breweries in D.C., and it’s home to the largest percentage of Black beer brands in the U.S. Kim Bender, Executive Director of the D.C. Brewers Guild tells us (and a room full of beer lovers) where to start our tasting, and about the crazy story behind recreating Senate Beer after a 1930s fire wiped out the original recipe.

The Air Bee n Bee with smoked bee larve. (Caitlin Isola/Silver Lyan)

FYI: The Silver Lyan debuts its new menu this evening with 11 new cocktails all with a backstory of migration. My favorite item is the Air Bee n Bee cocktail, a refreshing funky drink with Patron, almond blossom, and hay-smoked bee larve. Wow.
