Does your water have lead in it?
June 12, 2023
Hey, neighbor! Now that we’re able to breathe again, we can get back to D.C.’s favorite summer activity: farmers markets. Do you have any tips about how to navigate the District’s many markets? Do you have a favorite? Any highly recommended treats?

What's CITY Talking About?
D.C. Forced To Return Millions in Grants
From the years 2017-21, D.C. returned more than $10 million in federal grants meant to help end homelessness. It’s a small percentage of the money received ($23 million to $28 million every year), but still a large amount to give up. The D.C. programs receiving these housing funds are understaffed and unable to fully use them. Unlike local funds, which can be redistributed, unused federal money must be returned. Streetcar Project Halted
D.C. officials delayed funding for the long-promised extension to the H Street Corridor streetcar. For years, the city has been promising to connect the line to the Benning Road Metro station. Councilmember Charles Allen who chairs the Transportation Committee suggested that the delay will allow the city to rethink how a streetcar system would fit into the city’s transit network overall. Smokey the Bear Visits D.C.
A black bear was spotted strolling around Brookland on Friday. The bear, lovingly nicknamed Smokey, was resting in a tree for a while but then began to run around backyards in the area. Eventually, the bear was tranquilized and sleepy Smokey was taken care of by veterinarians from the zoo and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Wishing a more BEARable week coming up for dear Smokey! [DCist/Twitter]

Where Is It?

I’m so impressed with how many people got this one! This picture was taken looking down on the intersection of W Street Northwest and Florida Avenue Northwest, from the southwest corner. The building on the right is a Whole Foods and the one on the left is Salon Revive.
Nice work Elisa B., Sarah H., and Kirsten P. for being the first three to get it right!

We have another reader-submitted photo this week. Can you identify the curved building in the middle? Bonus points if you know any of the history behind it!
P.S. We love seeing your D.C.! Submit your own “Where Is It?” photo for readers to guess.

Redesigning D.C.’s Worst Intersection

There’s a plan to redesign and rename Dave Thomas Circle — that chaotic, sweat-inducing triangle intersection in Northeast. Maura Brophy runs the NoMa Business Improvement District and tells us what‘s in store for the space. And it’s so, so much better.
Ever wonder about the day-to-day of a D.C. food critic? The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema walks through an average week in his life, complete with multiple restaurants a day, some workouts, and half a dozen credit cards in different names.
