Metro fares are changing

June 13, 2023

Great news, D.C. The Wilson Pool is back open! For now, at least. It’s closing again for repairs at the end of the summer, but there are plenty of other pools to keep you cool in the meantime. And keep scrolling for more summer entertainment tips.

What's CITY Talking About?

Metro Improvements

The Red, Blue, Silver, and Orange lines will all see more frequent trains starting this week. Metro will also implement its planned fare changes. Base fare during peak periods will be $2 instead of $2.25, but rides longer than three miles will be more expensive than before, with a cap at $6. [Washington Post 🔒]

McMillan Development Inching Forward

Mayor Muriel Bowser and city officials gathered yesterday to show off the progress on the McMillan site. The development project has been mired by legal and development battles for years. The 25-acre site located at North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue NW is meant to become a community center and park next year, with housing, a grocery store, and offices also coming soon. Rise In School Hate Incidents

Loudon County schools are grappling with increased hate speech and racial slur incidents. There have been 861 incidents this school year, and the most common issue is use of the N-word. It’s a problem plaguing schools across the D.C. metro area. Loudoun school officials are offering training and professional development sessions in response. [WTOP]

Drought Watch on the Potomac

The Potomac River is on hourly drought watch since the water levels have become so low. While currently, the flow is enough to meet water demands of the area, there’s a chance that authorities will have to release water from upstream reservoirs to maintain D.C.’s drinking water supply. This hasn’t happened in over a decade, so let’s hope we get more rain soon! [WTOP]
