D.C. moves forward with reparations bill
June 15, 2023
Hey there, Washingtonian! We are on the hunt for D.C.’s smallest park. We were inspired by Woodley Park's Pocket Park. Do you know of any cutie parks or gardens around D.C.? Throw a tip our way!

What's CITY Talking About?
Crime Lab Stays Separate
The D.C. Council voted to keep D.C’s crime lab independent of the D.C. police. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s budget proposal called for the lab to be absorbed by the MPD but the council felt that could create a conflict of interest and compromise future investigations. They’re still pondering oversight solutions to fix the troubled crime lab that lost its accreditation in 2021. [DCist]
Trying to Veto the Veto
The House of Representatives made a last-ditch effort to block the police accountability bill passed by the D.C. Council last year. President Joe Biden vetoed the Republican-sponsored resolution to block the bill, and on Tuesday, the House could not muster the two-thirds majority needed to override a presidential veto. The vote fell mostly on partisan lines and follows the recent trend of the Republican-led House interfering in D.C.’s local affairs. [DCist]
Bears in D.C? Impawsible …
The D.C. area had another bear sighting this week, this time in Rockville. Officers are working with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources to find it. This is becoming a bizarre trend! A black bear was caught in Northeast D.C. last week and released into the wild. And two months ago, another was captured in Montgomery County. [WTOP]
