MoCo buses will be powered by poop

June 26, 2023

Morning, neighbor! Ever wonder where Congressional candidates’ campaigns eat? Well, Kevin McCarthy spent $33,000 at Chick-fil-A and Nancy Pelosi spent $25,800 at Osteria Morini during the 2022 midterms. I think I’d rather work for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who dished out for Albi and China Chilcano.

What's CITY Talking About?

Take a Dump, Power a Bus

Montgomery County buses will soon be powered by poop. The county’s Ride On bus fleet will run on renewable natural gas made by capturing methane gas from the wastewater treatment process. The project helps Montgomery County get closer to their goal of a 100% carbon emission reduction by 2035. [WTOP]

Illegal Weapon Testing In the Potomac?

The Navy has been illegally testing weapons in the Potomac for over a century, according to a lawsuit filed this week by two environmental groups. The lawsuit claims that the Navy is violating the Clean Water Act by discharging pollution into the river without a permit. The Navy argues that the tests aren’t significantly impacting the river’s health, but the suit alleges they are harming both the environment and river recreation. [DCist]

Paddling the Potomac

62-year-old Cathy Brennan is kayaking the entire Potomac alone. Her ambitious trip began in May, and this week, she passed through the D.C. area. Brennan has kayaked the length of five other rivers and completed a 700-mile journey on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. She hopes to finish up her spectacular solo trip in around a week at the Chesapeake Bay. [Washington Post 🔒]

Where Is It?

This one was so hard! This is the roof of the Harris Teeter in Adams Morgan. It used to be the National Arena, a public roller rink and a bowling alley. It later became the Citadel Motion Picture Center, and is now a grocery store and apartments. Nice detective work, Ben W. and Danyelle H., who were our ONLY two correct guessers this week.

Next up, can you tell me where this enormous foot is located? Bonus points if you know anything about the piece or who made it. Hint: It is part of a larger sculpture.
