DC might force you to change your pipes

July 5, 2023

Good morning, neighbor! Having the Fourth of July on a Tuesday is brutal, but I hope you’re hanging in there. Today we’ve got some “hair of the dog” suggestions to speed your recovery. 😉

What's CITY Talking About?

A Steep Cost for No Lead Pipes

D.C. Water plans to spend $1.5 billion to replace all of the city’s lead pipes by 2030. Original estimates set the project cost at $500 million at most, yikes. D.C is in the top 10 U.S. cities for lead pipes, and our podcast City Cast DC covered how to check if your pipes need replacing. D.C. Water is working to acquire funding to avoid any cost increases for residents, especially since the plan may include a mandate for all homeowners to replace their pipes. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Explosive Attack on Northeast Businesses

Police are searching for suspects who set off a series of explosives in Northeast D.C. on Sunday. The first one went off at a Truist Bank, followed by an attack at a Nike store, and minutes later, a Molotov cocktail-style object was thrown at a Safeway. All of the businesses were closed at the time of the explosions and there were no injuries. Police believe that the suspects were targeting businesses, not individuals. [WTOP]

No New Applicants For Rental Assistance

D.C.’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) won’t accept new applicants this year even though it was given $33 million in new federal funding. Instead, those funds will be used for existing ERAP applicants and the Rapid Rehousing (RRH) program. Critics say this is a misallocation of funds because RRH has inadequately helped people find permanent housing. [DCist]

There's a big debate happening in Shaw over potential new condos at 1515 Ninth Street NW. A local developer wants to replace the vacant building and parking lot with a six-story-high building.
