Help catch Alexandria’s pet saboteur

July 11, 2023

Hey, neighbor. It’s 7/11, and you know what that means – Free Slurpee Day! Head to your neighborhood 7-Eleven and fill up on blue-flavored ice (yes, blue is a flavor). Sadly, they changed the rules, and you can only get a small size now, but still worth it.

What's CITY Talking About?

Cracking Down on Unsafe Driving

D.C. Council has proposed some bills to take on the growing problem of reckless driving in the District. They include: creating more consequences for repeat offenders, suspending licenses before convictions in specific circumstances, allowing out-of-state drivers to be sued, and adding license points to records for camera tickets. A bill also proposes that courts, not the Department of Motor Vehicles, would be in charge of suspending licenses. [DCist]

Major Fines, Minor Discrepancies

Several restaurants in D.C. have received wage theft notices, resulting in huge fines. The restaurants are accused of violating labor laws. However, many restaurants say the fines are for minor admin errors. One restaurant says it owes $108,400 for allegedly failing to pay two employees a total of $1.85. The local restaurant trade group says these fines are unprecedented and that the notices seem questionable. [DCist]

Sewage Swim

The highly anticipated swim event in the Anacostia river has been postponed until September. The recent heavy rainfall caused sewage to spill into the river. So while testing has shown that the cleanliness of Anacostia river has improved over the years, it's still illegal to swim in any of the District’s waterways until September. [WTOP]

Pet Attacker in Alexandria

Nine sausages with fish hooks placed inside were found in Alexandria in an area frequented by dogs and other animals. The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Virginia is offering $5,000 for information on the culprit. [WTOP]
