What to do if your landlord is negligent

July 14, 2023

Hey, neighbor! We want to hear your worst group home horror stories for an upcoming segment. Did you live in a row home that was falling apart? Have a makeshift bedroom in the living room? Apply to 17 homes only to not get accepted? We want to hear!

What's CITY Talking About?

Restaurant Workers Hit With Wage Theft

D.C.’s Department of Employment Services found that over 1200 workers were not paid the tipped or full minimum wage in 2020. The audit is in response to restaurant owners’ claims that they were fined for very minor payment discrepancies. It’s unclear how many of the 1200 impacted workers are a result from these small errors or more serious wage theft. [Twitter]

Win For Walkers

After a lengthy neighborhood debate, the service lane along the Cleveland Park corridor will remain closed to cars. The space will be used for pop-ups, outdoor seating for restaurants, and the farmers market. The car ban has sparked tension between pedestrians who want more space and businesses who want parking for customers. [Axios]

Orange Line Stops Reopen Today

The Vienna and Dunn Loring stations are reopening today after weeks of construction work. Now, construction is moving to the Green Line. From July 22 to September 4, five Green Line stations between Fort Totten and Greenbelt will shut down to replace rails. [WTOP]

Nice job! This is The Spot Asian Food Hall in Rockville, right next to the town square. Reader Hannes B. says it’s her go-to spot for Gong cha waffles with ice cream. Personally, I love the Poke DC bowls.

This one was tough. Kudos to Hannes B. and Karla G. for being the first to guess correctly. I’ll also throw a free point to those who guessed The Block in Annandale as well.

What are you doing in my swamp! Grrr. (Kaela Cote-Stemmermann/City Cast DC)

This one should be easier (especially if you kept up with the newsletter last week, wink wink). Can you guess where this swampy marsh is? Hint: it’s in the District and has a big attraction this time of year.
