🚦 Dave Thomas Circle gets demoed

July 19, 2023

Morning neighbor! Apparently, Arlington snagged the number one spot as the “fittest city” in the nation for the sixth year in a row. D.C. came in a close second. This proves my theory that 10% of Washingtonians are on a run at any time. Couldn’t be me.

What's CITY Talking About?

Can you spot what's missing in Dave Thomas Circle?(Joe Ingram/Hey DC reader)

Dave Thomas Circle Gets Demoed

Construction has finally begun on the infamously hated Dave Thomas Circle. The project will reconfigure the traffic pattern, add green space, and build protected bike lanes. The construction should be completed by next December. Don’t miss your chance to vote on the new name. My personal favorite is Mamie “Peanut” Johnson Plaza (or maybe Peanut Plaza for short?) New Policies For Trans Students

Virginia’s Department of Education changed its policies towards transgender students. The new policies require schools to defer to a student’s guardian on decisions regarding names and pronouns. Also, bathrooms and sex-separated school activities will be determined by the sex assigned at birth, not by gender identity. Opponents say this will create hostile and dangerous learning environments. [Northern Virginia Magazine]

Eat Your Veggies, PG

Prince George’s County passed a healthy restaurant act that will offer grants and zero-interest loans to incentivize eateries to offer healthier items. To qualify, 40% of a restaurant's meals must be determined as “healthy” and have at least one plant-based option. The long-term goal is to prevent illnesses like heart disease and diabetes among county residents. [DCist]

New Mascot, New Owner, New Stadium?

The Commanders, now under new ownership, want out of Landover, and the mayor wants to bring them back to RFK Stadium. But many don’t think it’s the best use of one of the city’s few open land parcels. The Washington Post’s Sam Fortier is here to explain who and why.

That’s all for today, thanks for reading!
