Hip hip hooray, Snyder sells Commanders!

July 21, 2023

Happy Barbenheimer weekend, D.C.! Hellbender Brewing Company has come up with two new beers  “Beerbie,” a pink pomegranate ale, and “Hoppenheimer,” a dry-hopped IPA, for you to bring to your double-header pregame. 👡 🎀 ☢️ 🖤

What's CITY Talking About?

Snyder Finally Sells!

At long last Dan Snyder has sold the Washington Commanders (queue collective sigh of relief). The NFL universally approved the team's sale last night to a group led by Josh Harris – owner of the Philadelphia 76ers – for $6.05 billion. The sale is the largest for a North American professional sports franchise ever and puts the nail in the coffin of Dan Snyder's reign of terror. Collective cheers could be heard around town. [ESPN]

DCA Long-Haul Flights Rejected

The attempt to add more long-haul flights to Reagan National Airport was rejected by the House. Sad for travelers, but a win for city leaders who said the plan would jeopardize safety, cause delays, and increase noise. The business group in support of more flights said they’d continue to fight. Washingtonian On Love Island

Keenan, a 23-year-old (journalism!) student from D.C., made his debut on the fifth season of Love Island USA earlier this week. All we know from his bio – and an absolutely feral first episode that pushes gender stereotypes back to the 20th century – is that he has an eight-pack, loves dogs, and is in it to win it. He and contestant Kay Kay were the first to smooch and are the clear front-running couple. Is it too soon to call him a hometown hero? [DCist]

MoCo Renters Rejoice

Montgomery County just passed a rent stabilization law that limits annual rent increases to 3% plus inflation with a hard cap of 6%. The law also allows the county’s Department of Housing and Community Affairs to limit extra fines charged by property owners. Montgomery County is now among the largest jurisdictions in the country to pass this kind of law on a permanent basis. [DCist]
