DC group house horror stories
July 24, 2023
Morning, neighbor. Apologies for the late send today. We had some tech snafus! Speaking of ... here's a reminder that the Green Line is shut down between Fort Totten and Greenbelt through Sept. 4 for network tech upgrades. Not to fear, there’s a free shuttle bus running that I’m sure will be very fast and not annoying at all.

What's CITY Talking About?
Illegal Confinement At D.C.’s Youth Jail
Staffing issues in D.C’s youth pretrial detention facility has led to children being confined in their cells beyond legal limits – even up to 23 hours a day. Parents are concerned for children’s safety in the overcrowded, understaffed facility. Government officials say they are working to address it with rotating staff schedules and moving kids to other facilities when possible. [DCist]
New Emergency Housing
A new 30-unit shelter for domestic violence survivors in Northeast will open in October. The building, built by DC SAFE, includes rooms available within an hour's notice that include kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas. This is only the second building of its kind in D.C and fills a critical gap in D.C.’s shelter system. [DCist]
West Nile Alert
Mosquitoes in two parts of Anne Arundel County Maryland have tested positive for West Nile virus. Thankfully, there’s been no cases reported and the area will be thoroughly sprayed. You should be able to avoid the buggers with some good quality bug repellent and by steering clear of areas with lots of standing water. [WTOP]

Where Is It?

You guessed it! These ponds are at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. You can’t see in this picture (that would be too easy) but this park is home to over 500,000 lotus that are blooming right now. If you haven’t gone, I highly recommend it! Check out our guide before you go to make the most of it.
Nice work to readers Jane M., Kristen L., and Ian D. for being the first three to guess correctly!
Staying within the outdoor park theme, can you tell me where this structure is and what it’s used for? Bonus points if you have any cool stories or photos about it. No hints this week, I’ve said too much already.
