The DMV could get a new airport

July 28, 2023

Morning! What makes a great bathroom? NoMa resident Chris Waldrop documents D.C.’s most interesting ones, including Bar Spero (entirely purple), Right Proper (has a piano), and Capitol Hill Books (filled with books). What are your favorites?

What's CITY Talking About?

New Airport On the Horizon

Later today, the Manassas Regional Airport is likely to get approved for commercial airline service. The airport director says that once expanded, the airport will focus on low-cost, regional flights and hopefully provide convenient options for locals. [Washington Post 🔒]

  • Related: This is going to take four years to build. In the meantime, here’s how to get the best, cheapest flights from our three other airports. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Chemical Plant Poisoning Ivy City

Ivy City residents are trying to shut down a neighborhood chemical plant they say is poisoning them. The plant produces sealants for the U.S. Navy and has been operating without pollution permits in the neighborhood for decades. Testing showed that air downwind of the factory was high in numerous cancerous compounds. [DCist]

Racial Unemployment Gap Worst in Nation

A new study identifies D.C.’s Black-white unemployment gap as the worst in the country. Black unemployment is almost seven times higher at 9.6%, compared to 1.4% among white workers. The city’s unemployment is also geographically concentrated, with the highest rates east of the Anacostia River. [DC Fiscal Policy Institute]

DC’s First LGBTQ Senior Home

Mary’s House for Older Adults has launched construction on D.C.’s first home for LGBTQ seniors. The property in Southeast will include 15 residential units and communal living space. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. [Washington Blade]
