What's CITY Talking About?

Should DC Play Ball?

The District is contracting a new “sports study” to weigh options for financing a new stadium at RFK and other local arena upgrades. It will also study the economic impact of sports facilities on surrounding communities and of sports teams leaving the city altogether. [Washington Post 🔒]

Tax Break Takes a Break

Virginia’s annual sales tax holiday probably won’t happen this year. Why? Lawmakers simply forgot about it. Since 2015, the Virginia General Assembly has given a break on sales tax for school supplies and clothing for three days starting the first Friday in August. However, this year lawmakers said they were too busy focusing on the currently stalled state budget. [Washington Post 🔒]

Beware of This Renter’s Scam

If you’re trying to rent in D.C., watch out. Scammers are pretending to be landlords or property managers and posting fake property ads. The scammers request application fees or security deposits, then take the money and run. Don’t send any money without seeing the property first either in person or through a virtual tour! [WTOP]

Where Is It?

Yep! This is Tudor Place, at the north end of Georgetown. It was home to six generations of Martha Washington’s descendants, as well as hundreds of enslaved people, from 1804 - 1983. Now, it’s  museum and garden are open to the public. We wrote up a guide of the mansion and surrounding area, so you can make a whole day of it.

Nice work Judith B., Carol E., and Leigh P. for being the three readers to guess correctly. But, don’t worry you have another shot.

Can you tell me where this hallway is? I’ll give you a hint. It’s a great place to go see some art. Bonus points if you can tell me your favorite thing to do here.

Remember! You can always submit your own photos for our “Where Is It?” section.

Should All DC Stoves Be Electric?

It’s a common attitude among foodies that gas stoves are better, but not if you ask Rob Rubba, chef at Oyster Oyster. And he would know, because he just won a James Beard Award. As D.C. Council considers legislation that incentivizes a switch from gas stoves to electric, Rob tells us why in his kitchen, it’s electric!

That’s all for today, thanks for reading, and be sure to forward us on to a D.C. friend!
