What haters get wrong about DC

August 14, 2023

Hey, neighbor. Apparently, no one wants to buy Dan Snyder's Potomac mansion. He’s lowered the price by $14 million (such a steal). If it had sold for the original $49 million price, it would have been the highest home sale ever in the DMV.

What's CITY Talking About?

Inflation Sucks, But It Could Be Worse

Inflation is growing slower than in the DMV than the rest of the country. Right now, we’ve got the second lowest rates in the U.S. In July, the national annual rate of consumer price inflation was 3.2%, while D.C.’s was almost half that at 1.8%. It doesn’t get any lower than that, unless you want to move to Alaska. [WTOP]

Sobriety Checks for Metro Operators

Train operators working split shifts are going to have to undergo sobriety checks from now on. Metro updated its drug and alcohol policy after an operator fell asleep at the engine last year, stranding passengers for 40 minutes. [Washington Post 🔒]

You, $5 Richer

If you have a sketchy-looking email from Grubhub with a $5 - $10 check enclosed, it’s real. Grubhub just sent out $2.7 million to D.C. consumers as part of a recent lawsuit settlement. Last March, Attorney General Karl A. Racine, sued the company for charging customers hidden fees and using deceptive marketing. Now we’re getting that money back via a third party distributor. So, buy yourself a little treat today. [Twitter/Washington Post 🔒]

Where Is It?

Ding ding! This is the Anacostia Arts Center. Right in the heart of old Anacostia, this collective has a variety of local shops and eateries. Some of my favorites are Mahogany Books and the Vintage and Charmed thrift boutique.

If you need an excuse to go, they are hosting a Black-owned pop-up shop next week called Sounds of the City with go-go DJ sets, community workshops, and local artisans.

Nice job Kimberly S., Gbenga T., and Greg S for being the first to guess correctly.

Next up, can you tell me what restaurant this is and where it is located? Bonus points if you tell me your favorite thing to get there.

What Haters Get Wrong About DC

D.C. gets a bad rep ... in a lot of ways. People say we're not fashionable, we're careerist snobs, we’re preppy. Are they right? City Cast DC’s co-hosts discuss D.C.’s stickiest stereotypes and see if they can prove them wrong.

That’s all for now. Have a great week!
