Cooling Center Inconsistencies
A new Street Sense investigation found that even during heat emergencies, more than half of D.C.’s 40 cooling centers have not been open to the public this summer. The audit also found inconsistent access across the city, with notable lapses in Wards 3 and 6. [Street Sense]

New Innovation Fund:
Arlington and Fairfax counties have each established a one million-dollar innovation fund to help grow promising startups and create new jobs. Arlington's program started last month and will award $25,000 to $50,000 to more than a dozen startups. Fairfax started in March and is choosing its first grantees. [DC Inno]
A Different Kind Of Monument
Six temporary art installations are popping up on the National Mall on Friday, displaying underrepresented stories such as land dispossession, enslavement, and LGBTQ+ discrimination. The pieces are by artists from around the country and will stay up for one month. [DCist]

How To Build a New D.C. Monument
During WWII, women took on roles as codebreakers, pilots, butchers, and farmers to aid in the war effort. College student Raya Kenney has been trying to get a memorial to these women built in D.C. since she was 11. She explains what it takes to get a new monument constructed.
