Where to go for DC restaurant week
August 21, 2023
Morning neighbor! We’re looking for some good hee-hee ha-ha’s to scare away the end-of-summer blues. What are your favorite live comedy joints in D.C.? We’ll share them in tomorrow's newsletter.

What's CITY Talking About?
Cleaning Staff Walk Out
More than a dozen janitors and custodians left their jobs downtown to protest. The strike followed a federal labor charge workers filed against their company, Quality Building Maintenance Inc. Workers said when they tried to unionize, they were harassed, fired over their immigration status, and discouraged from taking bathroom breaks. [DCist]

Horrid Conditions at Local Dog Shelter
Volunteers at The Humane Rescue Alliance say the shelter has unacceptable conditions for dogs. They allege that animals often aren't let outside, aren’t given water, and that euthanasia decisions are rushed. A spokesperson for the HRA rejected the allegations, but DCist/WAMU confirmed reports of dogs living in their own waste. [DCist]
Malaria Case In Maryland
For the first time in 40 years, a Maryland resident who had not recently traveled was diagnosed with Malaria. The patient is out of the hospital and recovering, but this was the eighth case of locally acquired malaria in the U.S. since May. The health department is investigating but in the meantime pile on the bug spray. [NBC4]

Where Is It?

Yes! This is the entrance to Tiger Fork, the Cantonese hot spot in Blagden Alley. Chef Simon Lam just left Peter Chang's restaurant group and is now leading the kitchen here. He’s already changed up the menu and by the sounds of it, it's worth a visit.
“My fave restaurant in all of D.C. I love the fried rice with shrimp and sausage. Best hangover food of all time.” – Reader Sage R
“I’m vegan and love that they have a number of vegan dishes on the menu. Also, killer cocktails!” – Reader Ambika K.
“The smashed cucumbers are so good!” – Reader Jill A.
Between Tiger Fork, its neighbor Causa, and new cocktail bar Death & Co, Blagden Alley is becoming quite the culinary hotspot again. Congrats to Susan W., Michiko B., and Khalilah M. for being the first three readers to guess correctly!

This next one is harder, only true bibliophiles will be able to get it (hint, hint). Can you tell me where this atrium is?

A Social Worker Shortage Is Hurting DC’s Unhoused
D.C.’s unhoused population is still below pre-pandemic levels, but it’s increasing fast and is exacerbated by a lack of social workers. Marissa Lang, a reporter at the Washington Post, has been covering how this impacts the city.
There’s a new prehensile-tailed porcupette in town. The adorable (but prickly) baby will live at the National Zoo with its dad (Quillbur) and mom (Beatrix).
