GW is arming campus police

August 24, 2023

Morning, Washingtonian. This article got us thinking, what are the best bachelor/bachelorette activities in and around D.C.? If you’ve had one here, what did you do? Asking for a friend, of course.

What's CITY Talking About?

Downtown Restaurant Sued for Wage Theft

D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is suing downtown Kenyan restaurant Swahili Village for allegedly stealing wages and tips from staff since it opened in 2020 and failing to track employee hours. The lawsuit says some staff were left deeply underpaid despite working over 60 hours a week. Most of the restaurant's employees are people of color including African immigrants. [DCist]

GW Arms Campus Police

George Washington University is arming campus police officers to address rising crime, despite faculty disapproval. Armed officers will have to complete implicit bias training each semester, monthly de-escalation training, and renew their firearms qualifications three times per year. But more than 200 faculty members are still against the plan and signed a letter denouncing it. [WTOP]

Taking Admissions Debate to the Supreme Court

A group of Virginia parents has asked the Supreme Court to hear its case arguing that the admissions process at the prestigious Thomas Jefferson High School discriminates against Asian American students. TJ recently changed its admissions process to increase its diversity. The changes meant the Asian American student population went from 70% to about 50%. [Washington Post 🔒]

Wildflower follow-up: A few of you had thoughts on yesterday’s segment about potentially filling the National Mall with wildflowers:

“In the summers, I play in kickball leagues all over the mall lawns. I don’t know where we’d go if those were suddenly off limits.” – Natasha M

“As a D.C. resident, I would love to see this and would support it!” - David R.

“As someone who walks my dog on the National Mall almost daily, why can’t we have both lawn and wildflowers?” - Jill R

Where do you stand on the wildflower debate?
