What's CITY Talking About?

City Housing Goal On Track

D.C. is 85% of the way towards completing Mayor Muriel Bowser's housing goal for 2025. Of the 30,000 units created between January 2019 and August 2023, approximately 8,000 are affordable. [Urban Turf]

Murder Suspect Escapes From Hospital

A murder suspect escaped from George Washington University Hospital earlier this week when D.C. police officers were changing his handcuffs. Reports say the suspect, Christopher Haynes, was not secured to the gurney when he assaulted an officer and then fled. The police searched for hours after he escaped and believe he left the area. 911 Call Center Gets Called Out

Almost 100 ANC members have signed a letter asking city leaders to hold an oversight hearing into the city’s 911 system and to launch an independent task force examining pervasive issues at the center. The neighborhood leaders are also asking the agency to publicly report daily staffing statistics and release 911 call recordings upon request. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC Insider Trivia

First, let’s answer last week’s question:

Everyone knows the Washington Monument is the tallest structure in D.C. but what is the tallest habitable building in the District?

  1. The Cairo
  2. Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception
  3. Old Post Office Building
  4. The National Cathedral

The answer is the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, which is 329 feet tall. However, most of you guessed The Cairo. While it was considered the city’s first high-rise and kicked off the implementation of the D.C. Height Act, it’s technically no longer the tallest!

Nice work Mike A., Janet M., and Nikhila G. for being the first three readers to guess correctly!

What is D.C.’s official cocktail?

  1. Espresso Martini (vodka, coffee liquor, espresso)
  2. The Rickey (gin, lime, club soda, garnished with lime)
  3. Moscow Mule (vodka, ginger beer, lime, mint)
  4. Piña Colada (rum, coconut, pineapple juice)
