What's CITY Talking About?

Falcicchio Replaced

Mayor Muriel Bowser is reportedly preparing to name General Services Administration official Nina Albert as the next Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. A mouthful, but you might recognize that title because John Falcicchio resigned from the role in disgrace earlier this year, amid sexual harassment allegations against him. The scandal has raised concerns about a toxic work culture in the mayor’s office. [City Cast DC 🎧 / Washington Business Journal]

Fairfax Cop Indicted

A special grand jury has indicted a former Fairfax County police officer for fatally shooting a man outside the Tysons Corner Center mall in February. An earlier grand jury had ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to charge the officer, but he was fired in March after an internal investigation. [DCist]

Metro Has A Screw Loose

Metro is adopting new safety checks after a train derailment last month. Inspections showed that about 6% of brake discs on old Metro cars were flawed. Now, the agency will check bolts every 60 days to ensure they are properly tightened. [Washington Post 🔒]

Keen-eyed readers recognized this as one of the staircases at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library in Penn Quarter. Aside from good ol’ literature, the library is a great community resource — they provide services like tax preparation, job seeking events, public computer and tech use, and more. Plus, it’s home to Marianne’s by DC Central Kitchen.

Congratulations to Sylvia C., Gbenga T., and Kristin L., who were the first to step up and guess the location correctly. 👏🏾

This week’s secret location is a hallway with vibes reminiscent of “The Shining.” Do you know where the passageway leads?

Why a NoVa School Might Go to the Supreme Court

Thomas Jefferson High School, the math and science magnet school in Northern Virginia, is one of the most famous public schools in the country — and one of the toughest to get into. But some parents say the school’s new admissions process — which aims to improve diversity — actually discriminates against Asian students. They want the Supreme Court to get involved. Karina Elwood from the Washington Post brings us up to speed.
