💸 Why DC sports betting is a mess

November 2, 2023

I’ve got some joyful restaurant news! Greek restaurant Philotimo has officially reopened at 1100 15th St. NW after a fire last year forced them to shut down just six months after opening. Check out their website, and if you go, please let us know what you ate 🍲

What's CITY Talking About?

Around 150 Speeding Tickets Per Day in DC

D.C. Council held a public hearing yesterday on four bills trying to crack down on dangerous driving. Lawmakers released several statistics, including that about 50,000 tickets are given every year for drivers going 20 to 30 mph over the speed limit. Additionally, there have been 42 roadway deaths this year, a 16-year high. [WTOP]

Multiple Overdoses in One High School

There have been at least eight opioid-related overdoses in the last three weeks at a Loudoun County high school.  Police are investigating to identify the source of the drugs. With the fentanyl crisis facing D.C. and the nation, the FDA is pushing to make narcan more accessible. [WTOP, City Cast DC 🎧]

New DC Government Sexual Harassment Policies

Mayor Muriel Bowser signed an executive order to try to prevent sexual harassment in District agencies. It explicitly bans sexual and romantic relationships between supervisors and employees. It also mandates more frequent sexual harassment trainings for employees and creates a new task force to make additional recommendations for a harassment-free environment. [WTOP]

  • Related: The order comes after former Deputy Mayor John Falcicchio was accused multiple times of sexual harassment, leading to questions about the culture of the mayoral office. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Finally, A Battery Recycling Program

You can now drop off your batteries for free at sites around the city for recycling. The new battery recycling program is the first in the country to accept both rechargeable and single-use batteries. So if you don’t know what to do with your old battery that’s under 11 pounds, or less than 300 watt-hours, find a drop-off spot here! [Washington Informer]
