What's CITY Talking About?

More Bias Incidents At D.C. Schools

Jewish students throughout the Washington region have reported an increase in antisemitic graffiti, and Palestinian students recount being called terrorists since the Israel-Hamas conflict began last month. Additionally, George Washington University canceled many in-person events for its president’s inauguration last week, citing “global tensions.” [Washington Post🔒, WTOP]

Free Legal Assistance for Tenants

A group of nonprofits and law firms are reviving a program that matches some tenants facing eviction with free legal assistance. Pre-pandemic, this program helped dozens of families remain in their homes. According to the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, only 15% of tenants typically have legal representation during eviction proceedings, while about 95% of landlords have a lawyer. [DCist]

New Wizards Uniforms

The Wizards unveiled new City Edition uniforms that pay homage to D.C.’s boundary stones. These are the 40 markers that President George Washington placed to designate the city’s borders. The jerseys also honor Benjamin Banneker, the Black mathematician and astronomer who helped determine where to place the markers. The new uniforms will make their debut on Friday in the game against the Charlotte Hornets. [WTOP]

Where Is It?

Buildings in Glen Echo Park. (Kaela Cote-Stemmermann/City Cast DC)

The location of last week's “Where Is It” is Glen Echo Park. This Maryland arts and cultural center is just outside D.C. and has been open to the public since 1891.

🏆 Congrats to our first three winners, Jessica H., Beth L., and Arantxa C.! Here are some interesting facts they offered:

  • Jessica H.: "It was segregated in the 1920s." (And in fact, all the way up until 1961!)
  • Beth L.: "Some buildings have classes and there’s a children’s theater. I took a juggling class there more than 40 years ago."
  • Arantxa C.: "There is a carousel that opens in the summer months."

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

Can you guess this spot in D.C.? (Priyanka Tilve/City Cast DC)

This nighttime image is sure to make this week’s challenge extra challenging! But I have full confidence in you. As per usu, bonus points for anyone who can share extra details about this place 🤓
