📦 The FBI is finally moving

November 10, 2023

Hey neighbor! Remember to take a break for lunch today. Apparently, D.C. is No. 1 in the nation for skipping their lunch breaks. Over 50% of us eat at our desk over three times a week! That can’t be good for digestion.

What's CITY Talking About?

FBI Director Disapproves of New HQ

A new location has been chosen for the FBI headquarters, but the agency's director said he could not accept the decision to move from downtown D.C. to the Maryland suburbs. He criticized the politically fraught and drawn-out site selection process as fatally flawed, saying the feds had made questionable decisions and ignored the recommendations of the decision panel. [Washington Post 🔒]

  • Background: The FBI move has been a year-long battle of Maryland vs. Virginia as the states vied for the federal complex, which is projected to generate billions in taxpayer revenue. [City Cast DC 🎧]

High-End Brothels Busted in VA

A ring of ”high-end" brothels operating in greater Fairfax and Tysons, Virginia were shut down this week. Three people were charged with coercing people to engage in illegal sexual activity in rented high-end apartment complexes. While the client names have not been made public, investigators identified a "wide array" of buyers, including politicians, high-tech and pharmaceutical executives, and military officers. [Axios]

Let It Snow!

The Capital Weather Gang is calling for more snow this winter than in the past five years due to El Niño. But, we only got 0.4 inches last year, so don’t hold your breath for a blockbuster storm. They estimate there will be at least six to seven snowfalls in the area, mostly between January and March. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC Insider Trivia

Data center
This is where all those pictures of your cat live. (Jason marz/Getty Images)

Before we get to the trivia of the day, let’s answer last week’s question:

What percentage of the world’s data centers are in NoVa?

  1. Under 20%
  2. 30% - 40%
  3. 50% - 50%
  4. More than 70%

Yep! It might not seem it, but NoVa is one of the world's largest data center hubs. And now there is a proposal to add 30-million more square feet of data centers next year. While the centers might bring in the big bucks for NoVa counties, residents are less than thrilled about a new one in their backyard.

🏆 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Mackenzie C., Sherry L., and Caroline C. for being the first three to get last week’s question right!

Now, for this week's trivia question:

Eastern Market just celebrated a big anniversary. How old did it turn?

  1. 75
  2. 100
  3. 150
  4. 300

No Googling! But if you do need a little hint or suggestions on how to celebrate, we did a whole City Cast DC episode about it 🎧
