Cease-fire protest in SE turns violent
November 17, 2023
Morning, neighbor! Rumor is China is going to send new pandas to the U.S. but that they might not end up in D.C. or even on the East Coast. Call me petty, but if we can’t have pandas, then no one should 😤

What's CITY Talking About?
West End Shelter Delayed
City officials have pushed off opening a new shelter in Ward 2 after outcry from some residents and business owners in the area. The first-of-its-kind shelter for mixed-gendered adult families was meant to open this year in a former George Washington University dorm. The opening is now delayed at least six months while the city responds to a lawsuit filed by a neighborhood group. [Washington Post 🔒]
FBI Building Saga Continues
Virginia’s congressional officials are calling for a federal investigation into the selection of Greenbelt as the FBI’s new home. They allege that the General Service Administration’s decision was politically motivated. Maryland and Virginia have been competing for years to host the FBI’s new headquarters. [City Cast DC 🎧]
Local Impacts of Gaza Conflict
A protest calling for a cease-fire in Gaza turned violent outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in D.C. on Wednesday. Police and protesters each accuse the other of starting the assaults. The ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict continues to rattle locally, with George Washington University suspending a pro-Palestine student group this week. Tens of thousands of pro-Israel protesters also marched in D.C. on Tuesday. [WTOP, Washington Post 🔒]

DC Insider Trivia

Before we get to the trivia of the day, let’s answer last week’s question:
Eastern Market just celebrated a big anniversary. How old did it turn?
- 75
- 100
- 150
- 300
Yep! Eastern Market turned 150 years old on Sunday. That’s older than the telephone, ketchup, and the other state of Washington. It was one of three public marketplaces that L’Enfant planned for D.C. and is the only one still used as a public market.
🏅 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Abby D., Marie L., and Sharron J. for being the first three to get last week’s question right!
Now, for this week's trivia question:

Approximately how many spies are currently living in D.C.?
- < 500
- 2,000
- 10,000
- > 40,000
💡 Hint: Former CIA agent Lindsay Moran may or may not have spilled the answer on our recent podcast episode.
