🚕 Taxis are the new Uber

November 20, 2023

Hey, neighbor! For those craving small-town drama. Apparently, Andy Shallal, the founder of Busboys and Poets, banned former first lady of D.C. Cora Masters Barry after she allegedly called him “cheap” and “racist.” He released her texts and is refusing to let her in unless she apologizes.

What's CITY Talking About?

Your Uber Might Now Be a Taxi

Uber has established a new partnership with D.C. taxi drivers, giving them 100% access to Uber trip referrals. That means starting soon, Uber customers could be picked up by taxi drivers. Riders will pay the Uber X rate and will also have the option to re-match with a driver who is not in a taxi. [WTOP]

1 in 10 DC Residents are Housing Insecure

A new study shows that 12% of the city’s population doesn’t have stable housing. The overwhelming majority of these residents are from Black and Hispanic households. Additionally, the Urban Institute research says around one in four children in D.C. face housing insecurity. [DCist]

Metro Ridership Up, Metro Still in Danger

Metro ridership is on the rise, but unfortunately, it isn’t helping the transit agency deal with its $750 million operating budget shortfall. The reduced fares Metro introduced to bring back riders resulted in lower-than-expected revenue. [Washington Post 🔒]

Where Is It?

Nice work! The location of last week's “Where Is It” photo is the National Law Enforcement Memorial at Judiciary Square. It was designed by Davis Buckley and honors law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. The bronze lions are meant to represent the role of law enforcement and each have a different quote underneath, depicting traits like strength, courage, and valor.

🏅 Congrats to our first three winners: Isabella S., Michael O., and Eric M.! And here are some interesting tidbits you all offered:

Isabella S.: “There are names of officers killed in the line of duty on the walls and new names are added regularly.”

Linda M.: “The sculpted lions are by Raymond Kaskey and the Cubs are by George Carr.”

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

Can anyone tell me where these murals are located? As always, bonus points if you can tell me any fun facts about the artists or the area.

How NIMBYs Influence DC Housing

D.C. has built a ton of housing in the last 20 years, but it’s mostly been in a small number of neighborhoods — and the city still has a big housing shortage. Why did it develop like this? And what’s next? Leah Brooks studies this for a living, and she’s here to talk to us about some pretty remarkable new research.
