What's CITY Talking About?
Bill to Lower Responsibility of Flawed 911 Agency
A new bill would transfer some 911 dispatching responsibilities from the Office of Unified Communications to the D.C. Fire Department. The OUC has faced severe criticism for falling short of national standards for answering 911 calls in a timely manner. However, D.C.’s fire chief says he does not support the move. - Related: D.C. is also considering shifting some emergency response responsibilities away from 911 entirely. But the process is complicated. [City Cast DC 🎧]
Data Center Rezoning Approved
The Prince William County Board of Supervisors approved a rezoning plan that paves the way for a 270-acre data center. The approval of the data center in Bristow, Virginia has been highly contested by the community. The board had originally zoned the area for residential, but the rezoning plan passed five to three, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed. [NBC4, City Cast DC 🎧]
Georgetown “Graffiti Cliffs” Fenced Off
A popular hangout spot and Potomac lookout location in Georgetown is now fenced off. Many residents are furious, saying the change is a sign of gentrification and ruins a free, nice space in the area. However, the National Park Service says people shouldn’t be hanging out there due to safety concerns. [DCist]
