🏃🏽Your commute got (slightly) faster

December 6, 2023

Howdy, neighbor. We asked you to name the most transformative Washingtonians in 2023. And finally, the results are in! Listen to our City Cast DC podcast episodes to find out how we chose our six (sometimes controversial) winners, then read about their contributions in D.C.

What's CITY Talking About?

House Explodes in Arlington

A house in Arlington exploded on Monday night while police tried to respond to an emergency call there. The massive explosion was heard for miles, and the flames and smoke could be seen even in some D.C. neighborhoods. Police were called to the house after a suspect inside fired a flare gun 30 or 40 times from his home into the neighborhood. The police had been asking the suspect to come outside when the explosion happened. [Washington Post 🔒]

Shave Seconds Off Your Commute

The Red Line has started operating on Auto Door Mode, meaning faster entries and exits for riders. The tech is supposed to save 10 - 15 seconds per stop (that’s an entire minute depending on your commute). It’s pennies, but you can’t say WMATA isn’t trying. They’re testing out auto doors on the remaining lines for the future. [WMATA]

Washington Post Strike

Washington Post Guild workers will strike for 24 hours tomorrow. The guild says that the paper has been unable to provide what they deem a fair contract after 18 months of bargaining. During this period, the Washington Post laid off around 40 employees and offered voluntary buyouts to another 240 staffers. The strike tomorrow will include a picketing and a rally outside the Washington Post office. [X, formerly Twitter]
