What's CITY Talking About?

Driver Gets Two Cars Stolen In One Day

A D.C. Uber Eats driver had both her work car and her personal car stolen on the same day. And when one was recovered, it was completely riddled with bullet holes and filled with shell casings, drug paraphernalia, and trash. Police told her it was used in three other carjackings. [NBC4]

New Crime Center Announcement

Mayor Muriel Bowser announced yesterday that MPD’s new Real-Time Crime Center will open in February. It will be staffed 24/7 for local, regional, and federal law enforcement agencies to monitor security cameras and respond quickly to crimes. [Fox5]

  • Related: There are a lot of questions surrounding this 24/7 police surveillance. We break down the details in today’s podcast episode. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Comer Changes His Mind on Cannabis?

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has signaled that he’d consider reversing a Republican policy that bars D.C. from taxing and regulating marijuana sales. He told reporters as much after meeting with Mayor Bowser and D.C.’s police chief in a closed-door meeting about crime on Wednesday. [Washington Post 🔒]

  • Related: There’s no denying Comer’s influence on D.C. policy, which is why we begrudgingly named him the City Cast 6 winner for politics. I know, I know, but hear us out. [City Cast DC 🎧]

These Mussels Are Employed

Thousands of freshwater mussels will be added to the Potomac River in early 2024 to help filter the water, something they’ve long done for the Anacostia. This project is one of the results of a settled lawsuit between Alexandria and the Potomac Riverkeeper Network. [ALXnow, City Cast DC]

DC Insider Trivia

Before we get to the trivia of the day, let’s answer last week’s question:

D.C.’s cherry blossom trees that bloom along the Tidal Basin were a 1912 gift from the mayor of what international capital?

  1. Kyoto
  2. Taipei
  3. Tokyo
  4. Stockholm

The famous cherry blossoms were a gift from Tokyo's first mayor Yukio Ozaki in 1909. 2,000 trees were shipped from Japan, but upon arrival, they were found to be infested with insects and disease from the journey. So Ozaki shipped another 3,020 cherry trees, which are the ones we see today.

🏅 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Dianne J., Tiffany W., and Joan L. for being the first three to get the question right!

Now, for this week's trivia:

What is the D.C. flag based on?

  1. Three stars representing D.C., Maryland, and Virginia and two stripes for D.C.’s two rivers.
  2. George Washington’s coat of arms
  3. Calvert family coat of arms
  4. It’s a take on the American flag

Stumped? Here’s a hint.
