What's CITY Talking About?

DC-Virginia Arena Showdown

Mayor Muriel Bowser has introduced a bill to allocate $500 million towards renovating Capital One Arena, right as Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin prepares for a press conference later today where he's expected to suggest that the Washington Capitals and Wizards move to a stadium in Potomac Yard instead. Capital One Arena has been home to the teams since 1997, and they'd asked the city for financial support. Bowser says D.C. Council unanimously supports her proposal. [NBC4, City Cast DC 🎧]

Sweeping Carjacking Indictment

D.C. prosecutors have indicted ten people accused of at least a dozen carjackings and attempted carjackings since 2022. Police data shows that there have been more than 930 reported carjackings so far in 2023, compared to 451 in the same period last year. The ten defendants were linked to a social media chat in which they referred to themselves as GTAIRL, an abbreviation for Grand Theft Auto In Real Life. [Washington Post 🔒]

Dramatic Metro Cuts Loom

Metro is threatening massive cuts if local governments can’t help it close a $750 million budget gap. The agency announced a ‘doomsday scenario’ of potential changes, including closing all stations at 10 p.m., eliminating ten stations and 67 bus lines, reducing train frequency, increasing fares, and major layoffs.
