🔴 Republicans want to punish Gaza protesters
January 17, 2024
Good morning, neighbor! The Battle of Snowpenheimer – an epic last-minute snowball fight – took over the National Mall yesterday. The D.C. tradition hasn’t taken place since 2021 due to the lack of snow. Here’s to many more 🥂

Republicans Call to Punish Federal Protesters
The House GOP is pushing agencies to fine or fire federal employees who participated in yesterday’s walk-out protesting Biden’s support for Israel. The protest was meant to observe a “Day of Mourning" on the 100th day since Israel began military operations in Gaza. [Axios, City Cast DC 🎧]
Measles Is In the Air
Two cases of measles were reported at Dulles International and Ronald Reagan National airports on January 3 and 4. Measles is a highly contagious, airborne illness that causes runny nose, cough, fever and a rash. The Virginia Department of Health asks unvaccinated flyers who traveled on these dates to isolate themselves and contact a health care provider if they experience symptoms. [DCist]
Digital Gateway Fight Goes To Court
The fight over a highly controversial data center complex in Prince William County is going to court. The project – dubbed the Digital Gateway – was approved by county supervisors last month. Now, two new legal challenges claim it violates local zoning procedures. The suits want the County Circuit Court to overturn the board's approval. [DCist]

Will DC’s Latest Bill Slow Down Crime?
Raise your hand if your car was broken into last weekend ✋ (me, mine was). Luckily, Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto just introduced a massive 90-page crime bill to counter the steep rise in carjackings, theft, and homicides. Emily Davies from the Washington Post explains what’s in it and whether it will really make D.C. safer.
ICYMI:
An overly confident raccoon was strutting her stuff on 14th Street NW over the weekend. Probably trying to get a pint at Garden District before the snow.
