☃️ Second snow day in a week
January 19, 2024
Hey, neighbor! They say you’re not a real New Yorker until you’ve stolen a cab from someone. What do you think makes a real Washingtonian?

What's CITY Talking About?
When It Snows, It Pours
Another winter weather advisory began at 4 a.m. this morning. Several D.C.-area schools are closed for the day, and Metro has announced it may need to modify service if conditions deteriorate. The National Weather Service predicts 1 - 3 inches of snow, along with icy conditions. So maybe stay home today (looking at you, March for Lifers 👀). [Fox5, WMATA]
- D.C. has handled this week’s snowy conditions with mixed success. Hopefully, they’ve worked out the kinks. [City Cast DC 🎧]
Anti-Abortion Access March Set for Friday
The second March for Life demonstration is set to take place on the Mall today. 50,000 anti-abortion protesters are expected to gather to compel the federal government to outlaw abortion outright. Several streets close to the Mall will be closed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. [Washington Post 🔒]

Curtains for Local Theater?
GALA Hispanic Theatre says it was hacked January 11, losing over $250,000. Thespians worry this could spell the end for the theater, with the bank estimating it could take up to eight months to recover the funds. GALA is accepting donations here. [Popville]
Restaurants Sued Over Menu Fees
District restaurant group Knead Hospitality + Design is facing a lawsuit over misleading menu fees. Knead introduced an “Initiative 82 Fee” at Mi Vida, Gatsby, Succotash, and others last summer, in response to the 50% increase in tipped minimum wage. The lawsuit, by a local nonprofit that advocates for travelers, alleges that the fee is deceptive to guests and adds nothing to guest experience. [Washingtonian]

DC Insider Trivia

Let’s start with last week’s question:
What fictional movie character has been made into limestone grotesque on the National Cathedral?
- Gandalf
- The Joker
- Darth Vader
- Optimus Prime
Yep! There’s a Darth Vader grotesque on the north side of the National Cathedral. The limestone head was carved by Jay Hall Carpenter and installed in 1985.
Why is the Sith lord looming over the dark side (yes, literally) of the cathedral? Well, because of a contest by the kids’ magazine National Geographic World. Young readers submitted designs for the grotesque, and the magazine put them to a vote.
Darth Vader came in fourth. Other winners, affixed to nearby gablets on the building, include a man holding an umbrella, a girl with braces, and a raccoon. So keep a lookout next time you are there.
🏆 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Paris M., Marina S., and Maia J. for being the first three to get the question right!

Now, for this week's trivia:
In 1922, Washington D.C. got its largest snowfall on record. How many inches did we get?
- 8 inches
- 14 inches
- 28 inches
- 41 inches

Today on City Cast

Downtown D.C. gets another big blow. Plus, how is the city handling all this snow? And we’re also talking about the joys of pocket parks, including a new one on the horizon.
Thanks all for sending in your impressive Metro Wrappeds. Readers Heather H. and Lee D. were even in the top 4% of WMATA riders! As someone who works from home, I’m too embarrassed to own up to mine.
May the Metro be on time for you today!
