🚆 Will VA save Metro?

January 22, 2024

Morning, neighbor! Check out this ranking of D.C. bars and restaurants based on how loud they are. Perfect for those of us that get easily overstimulated, or finding a date spot where you don’t have to scream at each other.

What's CITY Talking About?

Will VA Save Metro?

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has pledged $150 million to WMATA in his latest budget to help bridge the agency’s $750 million budget gap. Next up, all eyes are on Virginia, where funding is a little more complicated. NoVa jurisdictions often help fund Metro, but this year, they want the state budget to contribute. [DCist]

Housing Inspections System in Disrepair

After years of tenant pressure to address poor living conditions, a recent council audit found multiple deficiencies in the District’s housing inspection system. The review found that many new inspectors were undertrained and that more than half of infraction notices sent to property owners went to the wrong address. [DCist]

First, where was last week’s photo?

This sculpture was at the Georgetown waterfront as part of the Georgetown Glow exhibition that closed down last week. The piece is called “Talking Heads” by Viktor Vicsec, a Hungarian artist who specializes in light and projection.

The heads are meant to imitate how the face uses muscle movement to project emotions, but these heads use 4,000 individually controlled LED lights. If you watch carefully, you can see that the facial patterns respond to one another, conducting conversations by means of light. But what are they saying?

🏆 Nice work, Beth L., Elena C., and Kelis W. for guessing correctly first!

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

Where are they? (Erin B./Hey DC reader)

Where is this memorial located, and what is it called? Bonus points if you can tell me anything interesting about its history.
