🚂 Metro hits the gas pedal

January 30, 2024

Hey, neighbor. It’s T-5 days until our first podcast live taping of 2024! We will be recording our February activities guide with Clockout DC at The Square food hall. Make sure to RSVP!

What's CITY Talking About?

Metro Putting Pedal to the Metal

Metro is pushing to increase maximum train speeds to 75 mph in some areas. The change will most affect suburban stretches on the Red and Silver lines where distances between stations are longer. Officials say the change will save over $2.3 million a year and shorten riders’ commute. [ABC7]

VA Reels in Weed Market

Virginia is considering a bill that would regulate cannabis sales starting Jan. 1 of next year. The bill comes in response to concerns that the state’s $3 billion weed economy is being run by unlicensed dealers. Virginia legalized marijuana possession in 2021. [Washington Post 🔒]

DUI Incidents on the Rise

A new report from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments shows that DUI-related casualties in D.C. rose significantly between 2021 and 2022. Drug and alcohol-related fatalities increased by 13%, while crashes and injuries rose by 13.7% and 9.5% respectively. [WTOP]

Today we are talking about mass car break-ins, CVS closures, and how the owner of the Wizards and Caps is justifying the team’s move out of D.C.

Correction: Friday’s newsletter said the Knickerbocker storm happened July 27, 1922, when in fact, it happened on Jan. 26, 1922. Though wouldn’t that have been something? Thanks to reader Michelle A. for her editorial eye!
