Taco Bamba Rescinds Chinatown Return

In another blow to Chinatown, Taco Bamba has canceled its plan to return to 777 I Street NW. Chef-owner Victor Albisu said “It just doesn’t feel like the time to be in that space again” following increased crime and big-name departures from the neighborhood. [Washington Business Journal 🔒]

MCPS Superintendent Steps Down

Montgomery County’s school district will be naming an interim superintendent tomorrow, after its previous administrator Monifa McKnight stepped down in a “mutually agreed separation” with the board of education on Friday. The board had called for McKnight’s resignation in January following her mishandling of sexual harassment allegations against a former principal. [MoCo360]

Carjacking Spree Victim Dies

Mike Gill, a former election official who was shot during a carjacking spree last week, died of his injuries on Saturday. He was shot in an attempted carjacking while he waited to pick up his wife near Mount Vernon Square. [Washington Post 🔒]

Every day this week, we’re highlighting a different way to celebrate Black History Month in D.C.! Today, the focus is local Black book clubs. Learn from Black authors, have intentional convos with your neighbors, and build community.

Black Books Matter Book Club:

This group reads a mix of satire, historical, and fiction novels all centered around the African American experience.

In the Margins Book Club:

Formerly known as the Well-Read Black Girl book club, this group focuses on championing marginalized authors and complex topics.
