🔴 Red Line summer shutdown

February 9, 2024

Oh hey, neighbor! The final designs for D.C.'s 11th Street Bridge Park were presented at a town hall yesterday, and we’re getting excited. The park, which connects Wards 6 and 8, will break ground in September and take two years to complete.

What's CITY Talking About?

Potomac Yard Arena Protests in Richmond

A group of local dissenters gathered in Richmond Thursday to protest the planned arena at Potomac Yard. They say the arena will cause serious traffic, drain taxpayer funds, and wrongfully move the Wizards and Caps from their home in D.C. [NBC4]

VA Police Cosplaying as Spiderman

A Green New Deal … for Schools?

Local students are fighting for new legislation that would address the climate crisis by requiring schools to serve sustainably-grown school lunches, run on renewable energy, teach climate justice curriculums, and more. Having already convinced the Board of Education to pass a similar resolution, student-activists are now turning their attention to city council. [DCist]

DC Insider Trivia

Dunbar High School, Washington, D.C. in 1917.

Let’s start with last week’s question:

Which high school in D.C. was also the first public high school for Black students in the U.S.?

  1. Anacostia High School
  2. Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Georgetown
  3. Jackson-Reed High School in Tenleytown
  4. Dunbar High School in Truxton Circle

Nice work! Dunbar High School was the first public high school for black kids in the U.S. and the first public high school of any kind in D.C. It opened its doors in Truxton Circle in 1870 and was considered the best Black school in the U.S. until 1955, when D.C. public schools were desegregated.

The high school has an impressive list of graduates including the first Black presidential Cabinet member, the first Black general in the Army and several of the lawyers who argued the Brown v. Board of Education decision.

🏅 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Daé W., Madeline H., and Cynthia W. for being the first three readers to answer correctly!

Now, for this week’s trivia:
