🌸 Your Guide To March In DC 2024

March 4, 2024

Morning neighbor! WMATA released the designs for their annual cherry blossom-themed SmarTrip cards and I neeeed one. They will be available March 15 at select stations. Also, keep an eye out for the cherry blossom-themed train and buses!

What's CITY Talking About?

WMATA Oversight

The Federal City Council is calling for a new independent body to oversee Metro. The goals would include finding long-term funding solutions for WMATA and changing the way it’s managed. City leaders called WMATA’s funding formula “seriously flawed” and “unsustainable,” after rushing to help repair its $750 million budget deficit earlier this year. [WBJ/DCist]

Commanders Return One Step Closer

The House passed a bipartisan bill to let D.C. redevelop the RFK Stadium site. The bill still needs to pass the Senate. If it makes it through, D.C. can transform the land into mixed-use development, and possibly a new home for the Commanders, which Mayor Bowser desperately wants. [Washington Post]

Another Train Surfing Death

A girl died train surfing on the Metro Friday morning. The dangerous trend of riding the Metro from the outside or the roof has become popular among kids and teens, primarily for social media purposes. Another person died train surfing on the Metro last June. [NBC4]

Where Is It?

NGA glass pyramids. (Ben Jaffe/Hey DC reader)

First, where was last week’s photo?

These glowing glass pyramids sit outside the East Building of the National Gallery of Art. They, along with the rest of the East Building, were designed by I.M.Pei. in 1986.

The architect faced many challenges when designing the space. Not only did the building have to fit an irregularly shaped, trapezoidal site and conform to the monumental scale of the Mall, it also had to fit with John Russell Pope's classical-style West Building. The final design was one of over 150 that Pei drafted.

Now, it has become a great rest spot for the D.C. Bike Party (as seen in this picture) and tired tourists alike.

🏅Nice work, Rick S, Julie K., Marisa B. for guessing correctly first this one was hard!

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

Where is this impressive hall located? Hint: yes, that is art on the walls.
