What's CITY Talking About?
MPD Expects Slight Officer Increase
D.C. police plan to hire more officers next year, reversing a seven-year trend, thanks to signing bonuses and a new union contract. MPD expects to hire 18 more officers than have left. In 2021, D.C. lost 219 more officers than it hired. [NBC4]
Owner Owes $1.8M for Tax Evasion of Vacant Property
D.C.’s Attorney General ordered George Papageorge and his entity, 10th & C Streets Associates, LLC, to pay the million-dollar fine in back taxes for a property that's been vacant since the 1980s. Neighbors of the 1000 C St. NE building have long complained that it “weighs down the neighborhood.” [WTOP]
Can Monthly Cash Stipends Improve Child Welfare?
Twelve mothers who were previously investigated for child neglect in D.C. will be receiving a $500 no-strings-attached monthly allowance through the Mother Up program. The study, which is limited to Black mothers, is exploring whether extra income could improve families’ lives and prevent them from being separated. The program, which received $1.2 million in funding from Mother’s Outreach Network, will run through October. [Washington Post]
