👍 5 tourist traps that are actually good
April 16, 2024
Good morning, neighbor! Today is D.C. Emancipation Day. The D.C. Compensated Emancipation Act ended slavery in 1862, freeing 3,100 individuals and reimbursed those who had legally owned them. We chat about that complex history today on our podcast.

What's CITY Talking About?
Schools Prepare for Staff Cuts
D.C. Public Schools are bracing for 200 fewer full-time positions next year – from teachers and janitors – despite a $181 million increase to public school funding. Rising salaries and the expiration of pandemic funds mean that schools will need to make cuts despite investment. Schools in Ward 8, which are already under-resourced, could lose up to 99 positions, the most of any ward. [Washington Post 🔒]
Wydown Unionizes
Workers at the Wydown Coffee Bar unionized, demanding better wages and safer working conditions. Members cited managerial abuse, short-staffing, and pest issues as impetus for their unionization. The effort follows a flurry of unionizing movements in the city, including at the Jose Andres restaurant, The Bazaar. [X (formerly known as Twitter), Bloomberg Law]
Bikers Not Giving Up on Conn. Ave
Bike advocates are fighting the city’s decision to cancel a protected bike lane on Connecticut Ave NW. Proponents of the lane have long argued that the three-mile strip is dangerous for bikers and pedestrians. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association started a petition and plans to speak against the decision at DDOT hearings. [Washingtonian,City Cast DC 🎧]
