What's CITY Talking About?
VA Budget Do-Over
Virginia scrapped their 2025 budget and will work towards a new bipartisan plan, hopefully avoiding a full veto. Gov. Glenn Youngkin looked to drastically rewrite the original budget that was passed by the Democrat-controlled legislature on March 9. [Washington Post 🔒]
Homicide Number Dropping
Homicides dropped 25% this year, following a general decrease in crime. There have been 48 homicides so far in 2024 compared to 64 in 2023, a year that ended with the most homicides since 1997. [Axios, City Cast DC 🎧]
‘Zombie’ Buildings Eating City Finances
A new report shows that empty downtown office buildings are affecting D.C.’s finances. A pre-pandemic boom increased tax revenue from commercial properties 58%, but the effects of COVID left the city scrambling to fill the gap. [Axios]
