Crystal City Underground Mall Closing

The shops in Crystal City underground – aka the DMV’s most haunted mall – will close in October, after 50 years of operation. Despite loyal followings for some of the vendors (Sushi Garden anyone?), the property owner says the underground retail concept is no longer profitable in the wake of the pandemic. The space will still be open to the public as a connection to the Crystal City Metro Station. [Washington Business Journal]

Teens Arrested Over Skip Day Shooting

Two teens were arrested in relation to a shooting in Greenbelt on April 19. The shooting happened at a senior skip day event, and injured five students. The teens, 14 and 16-years-old, are being charged as adults. [ABC7]

Troll Takes Over DDOT Socials

An impostor has been running the DDOT director’s X account for over six months. The troll took control of the account after the @DDOTDCDirector handle went up for grabs when the former director resigned. DDOT condemned the account, which has posted everything from AI-generated images of development to fake press releases. [Washington City Paper]

Oyster Bar Fraud

A former general manager of Hank’s Oyster Bar faces two years in prison for stealing over $700,000 from the Alexandria location. Claude Ibrahim pleaded guilty to eight counts of embezzlement for creating fake employees to siphon money out of the bar. [WTOP]
