What's CITY Talking About?

R.I.P. RFK

The National Park Service has approved the demolition of RFK Stadium after it passed an environmental review period. The ruling paves the way for the redevelopment of the stadium, possibly as a new home for the Washington Commanders. The stadium was last used in 2019. [WTOP, City Cast DC 🎧]

Speed Cameras Make Bank

A new report shows that several D.C.’s speed cameras gave out over 10,000 citations in just over three months. The most trigger-happy camera, located along the Potomac Freeway at 25th Street NW, gave out 33,682 tickets between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2023. Many of the high-performing locations are new. DDOT emphasized the tickets are to deter speeding, not increase city revenue. [WTOP]

Marcel’s Closing Its Doors

West End fine dining mainstay Marcel’s is closing its doors just weeks after its 25th anniversary. Ownership made the decision after falling victim to tough times in the restaurant industry and failing to negotiate better terms on its lease. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC Insider Trivia

First, Let’s Answer Last Week’s Question:

What other city claims to have originated mumbo sauce?

  1. L.A.
  2. Chicago ⭐
  3. Denver
  4. Philadelphia

Yep! Despite its long-time popularity in D.C., mumbo sauce was technically invented by Capital City Mumbo Sauce in Chicago, which won its trademark in 2013 in a devastating blow to local pride.

Chicago might have the rights over a particular recipe, but in D.C., "mumbo sauce" refers to a range of spicy and tangy sauces found at Asian and chicken wing carryouts — not one particular recipe.

Chicago’s Capital City Mumbo Sauce is sweeter and smokier than what we are used to in D.C., while ours tends to have more spicy and sour flavors.

🏆 Congratulations to Hey DC readers Tyker G., Maia J., and Lataryna C. for being the first three to respond with the correct answer!
