🎉Celebrating AAPI Month in DC

May 6, 2024 · — Ashe

Howdy, neighbor 🤠 City Cast DC producer Ashe here, filling in for Kaela today. The DMV’s own Shaboozey and Tommy Richman are taking over the Billboard charts this week with their bangers “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” and “MILLION DOLLAR BABY”. Two great additions to this summer’s hot girl playlist if you ask me 💅

What's CITY Talking About?

Student Grazed by Stray Bullet in NW DC

A student went to the hospital with minor injuries after being grazed by a stray bullet at Dunbar High School on Friday. While shots were not directed at the school, a bullet flew through a classroom window following a barrage of gunshots across the street. [WTOP]

Counter Protest at GW Encampment

Pro-Israel counter protesters took to George Washington University last week, as the pro-Palestinian student encampment entered its second week. The day before, House Republicans James Comer and Lauren Boebert had publicly denounced the encampment at a press conference on campus, calling for police to clear the protesters. Despite tensions, the protests have remained peaceful. [WAMU]

Maryland House Race Gets Spicy

The primary House race for Maryland’s 6th District is heating up, as attacks fly between two Democrats vying for the seat. Candidate Joe Vogel publicly questioned establishment-backed favorite April McClain Delaney’s commitment to the Democratic party. Critics say the attack hurts the Democrats chances of winning the politically diverse district in November. [Washington Post 🔒]

DC’s Hummus Hub

Local hummus hero Little Sesame recently received $2.2 million from the US Department of Agriculture to develop its business and support organic chickpea farming. The grant further solidifies D.C. as the heart of the nation’s “hummus highway,” with behemoths Cava and Sabra also making their hummus in the DMV. [City Cast DC 🎧]

Where Is It?

First, what was last week’s photo?

You guessed it! It’s the Titanic Memorial at Fort McNair in Southwest. The statue is dedicated to “the brave men who perished in the wreck.” Erected in 1931 by the widow of President William Howard Taft, the solemn memorial originally lived between Georgetown and the Lincoln Memorial.

The statue was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, who won a contest restricted only to women artists. She won the competition in 1914, but it took almost 20 years to raise the funds to build it 🤯 My only critique is that it doesn’t look enough like Kate Winslet.

🏆 Congratulations to Rick S., Krista B., and Ron B. for being the first three to guess correctly, all before 7 a.m.

Now, onto this week’s challenge:

How DC Became a Hummus Hub

From Cava to Little Sesame, the DMV consumes a lot of hummus, and we make and export even more. Axios reporter Anna Spiegel is here to explain her theory that our region is becoming the hummus hub of North America.

That’s it. Catch me belatedly celebrating Star Wars day at the 25th anniversary re-release of The Phantom Menace (the best Star Wars movie don’t @ me) this week. May the force be with you. ✨
