What's CITY Talking About?
Parents Worried About Education Quality
A new poll found 46% of D.C. parents are worried about learning loss and teacher shortages. The study also shows significant concern about the quality of education and absenteeism in the wake of the pandemic. The city has been losing teachers at an alarming rate, and early budget proposals suggest there could be more layoffs coming. [Washington Post 🔒, City Cast DC 🎧]
More Booze in the Burbs
D.C. has long been considered the "Wild West" for booze. But, the suburb’s liquor laws are finally catching up as businesses try to follow shifting consumer habits post-pandemic. Virginia legalized to-go drinking in March, while Maryland is pushing to allow alcohol deliveries. The laws aim to boost business and drive up restaurant revenues. [Axios]

DC Primaries Approaching
Primary voting day is June 4! There are some big races: Ward 7 has 10 candidates to replace Vince Gray, while the incumbents in Wards 4 and 8 have notable challengers. Also, one of the city’s strangest positions is open, with shadow senator Michael D. Brown stepping down after almost 20 years. [City Cast DC 🎧]
Deadly Memorial Day Weekend
Officials found the body of a man who went missing while trying to swim across the Potomac at Great Falls over the weekend. Deaths in the Potomac are common in the warmer months, despite swimming being banned. On top of that, homicides were reported every day of the long weekend. [NBC4, Washington Post 🔒]
